County Lines: A Literary Journal Seventh Edition Call to Writers and Artists

County Lines Literary Journal is an annual literary journal compiled by the Franklin County Arts Council Writers Guild. We are calling for entries of prose, poetry, and art for the seventh edition to be published for 2020. There are no age or residence restrictions for submissions.  Past issues have included writers and artists from all over North Carolina and Southeastern states 

Now accepting poetry, short or flash fiction, essay, and creative non-fiction. Work containing erotica, violence, hate, political editorial, or excessive profanity will not be accepted.
  • Poetry – no more than 30 lines per poem, single spaced. You may submit up to five poems.
  • Prose – no more than1500 words or five double-spaced pages per entry. Limited to three entries per author.
  • Art-vertical or portrait format– high resolution digital copies emailed to CountyLinesLiteraryJournal@gmail.com (No more than 5 per artist). Color Art may be submitted for the cover art competition ($25 prize), vertical or portrait. Submit as digital jpeg in full color of at least 300 dpi as an attachment

All submissions must be in Word Documents, prose double spaced, poetry single spaced, and be emailed as attachments to CountyLinesLiteraryJournal@gmail.com  Include a short writer’s bio. Type your name, address, phone number, word count (line count for poems), and email address in the upper left-hand corner of the first page of your manuscripts and your name and title of submission in the header of each page.

Franklin County Arts Council Writers’ Guild Writing Contest

 The FCAC Writers’ Guild is sponsoring its fifth annual FCAC Writers’ Guild Carolina Prize writing contest.  It is open to writers of any age and location for previously unpublished (this includes online publication) poetry, short stories, and essays or creative non-fiction.  Two prizes will be awarded:

  • Prose - $100 plus publication in 2010 issue of County Lines: A Literary Journal and 2 free copies
  • Poetry - $100 plus publication in 2010 issue of County Lines: A Literary Journal and 2 free copies

Up to five honorable mentions will also be named. Honorable mentions will receive publication in County Lines and one free copy.

Entry Fee is are $10.00 for each entry. You may enter as many times as you wish at $10/entry.  Entries and payment must be postmarked by August 15, 2019.


  • All submissions should be blind (no identifying info except the title) and accompanied by a cover sheet with the title of the piece and your name and contact info.
  • We will reject any entries with offensive language or derogatory comments toward any person or group. 
  • Poems:  Maximum 30 lines excluding the title (1-3 poems will count as one entry) single-spaced.
  • Prose: Double-spaced, 12-point font, Maximum 1500 words. One prose piece is one entry.
  • Entries and payment must be postmarked by August 15, 2019

If you want your piece also considered for publication in County Lines, you must submit it separately to CountyLinesLiteraryJournal@gmail.com. There is no additional fee to submit to County Lines.
 DD’s Starving Writers Contest - First Prize $500!
The Franklin County Writers’ Guild is the recipient of an anonymous gift to fund a free fiction writers contest titled DD’s Starving Writers Contest. This will be a one-time only fiction contest with the following prizes:
  • 1st place-$500.00
  • 2ndplace-$250.00
  • 3rd place-$100.00.

The final judge for the contest is Nancy Peacock, the author of novels Life Without Water (chosen as a New York Times Notable Book), Home Across the Road, and The Life and Times of Persimmon Wilson, as well as the memoir and “writing-in-the-real-world” guide A Broom of One’s Own: Words on Writing, Housecleaning and Life. Peacock was Piedmont Laureate in 2018. She has facilitated several writing workshops and retreats for women. Her free Prompt Writing Class has been active since 2003 and continues to gain in popularity.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Only accepting fiction writing which may include short stories or novel excerpts.
  • Submission dates: December 1, 2018-May 1, 2019
  • Email manuscripts not exceeding 3000 words, double spaced, 12 pt Time Roman font. Submissions not previously published
  • Only one submission per author. Send only your own original work.
  • Franklin County Arts Council members of the contest committee, or anyone associated with this contest may not enter.
  • Your manuscript should not have your name or any identifying information on it.
  • Separate cover page - Contact information: Name, Title of submission, Address, Phone number, Email address and a short author bio
